The written form of Korean uses Hangeul, a writing system commissioned by King Sejong (1397-1450) during the Joseon Dynasty. Koreans are very proud of this remarkable achievement, and Hangeul is a very efficient and easy script to learn and use.

한국의 문자는 조선 왕조 세종대왕(1397~1450)이 창제한 고유 문자인 한글을 사용한다. 한글은 세계 여러 문자 중에서도 창제연도가 분명한, 배우기 쉽고 쓰기 쉬운 우수한 문자로 알려져 있다. 한국의 대표적인 문화유산이기도 하다.

Hangeul is composed of fourteen consonants and ten vowels. It can express virtually all the sounds produced by nature and humans.

현재 한글은 ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅊ ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅎ 14개의 닿소리(자음)와 ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ ㅣ 10개의 홀소리(모음)로 구성되어 있다. 한글은 24개 자모를 결합하여 매우 많은 말소리를 기록할 수 있다는 점에서 과학적으로 뛰어난 문자로 평가받고 있다.

Every year, UNESCO presents the King Sejong Literacy Prize to people who have made a distinguished contribution to the elimination of illiteracy. The inclusion of ‘King Sejong’ in the name of the prize may be said to be tacit recognition of his greatest accomplishment, the creation of Hangeul, which is easy to learn and use.

유네스코는 해마다 세계에서 문맹 퇴치에 공이 큰 사람에게 ‘세종대왕 문해상’(King Sejong Literacy Prize)을 수여하는데, 이는 누구나 쉽게 익히고 편히 쓸 수 있는 한글을 창제한 세종대왕의 노력을 세계가 인정한 것이라 할 수 있다.
