The country’s national anthem was composed in 1935 by Mr. Ahn Eak-tai, who added a melody to lyrics written in the early 1900s. It was officially adopted with the establishment of the government of the Republic of Korea in August 1948. Prior to that, the country sang the ame lyrics to the melody of Auld Lang Syne as the national anthem.

애국가는 1900년대 초에 작사된 가사에 1935년 안익태 선생이 곡을 붙인 것이다. 작곡되기 이전에는 가사를 스코틀랜드 민요 ‘올드랭사인’ 멜로디에 붙여 사용됐다. 1948년 8월 15일 정부가 수립되면서 공식 국가로 채택되었다.
