The national flag of South Korea is composed of a red and blue taegeuk pattern in the center and four black trigrams at each corner, against a white background. Taegeukgi was first used as the national flag when the Korean Empire was proclaimed in 1897. The pattern of today’s taegeukgi has changed somewhat from the flag used at that time. 

대한민국 국기인 태극기는 흰색 바탕에 가운데 있는 태극 문양과 사방 대각선상에 검은색 선형의 네 괘로 구성된다. 조선 말인 1897년 대한제국이 선포되면서부터 태극기가 국기로 사용되었다. 지금의 태극기는 그때 사용된 태극기에서 문양이 약간 바뀐 것이다.

The white background symbolizes brightness, purity, and peace-loving ethnic characteristics. The taegeuk pattern symbolizes yin and yang (i.e. the idea that all things in the universe are created and evolve through the interaction of yin and yang). 

태극기의 흰색 바탕은 밝음과 순수, 그리고 전통적으로 평화를 사랑하는 우리의 민족성을 나타내고 있다. 가운데의 태극 문양은 음(陰: 파랑)과 양(陽: 빨강)의 조화를 상징하는 것으로 우주 만물이 음양의 상호 작용에 따라 생성되고 발전한다는 대자연의 진리를 형상화한 것이다.

The four trigrams indicate the changes in and development of yin and yang by means of their combination (“ ” represents yin while “ ” represents yang; [geongwae] sky; [gongwae] earth; [gamgwae] water; and [rigwae] fire. The four trigrams surrounding the taegeuk represent unity.

네 모서리의 4괘는 음과 양이 서로 변화하고 발전하는 모습을 효(爻: 음 , 양 )의 조합을 통해 구체적으로 나타낸 것이다. 그 가운데 건괘(乾卦 )는 우주 만물 중에서 하늘을, 곤괘(坤卦 )는 땅을, 감괘(坎卦 )는 물을, 이괘(離卦 )는 불을 각각 상징한다. 이들 4괘는 태극을 중심으로 통일의 조화를 이루고 있다.

The national flag, including the taegeuk pattern, which our ancestors liked to use in their lives, expresses the ideal of the Korean nation’s pursuit of creativity and prosperity.

이처럼, 예부터 우리 선조들이 생활 속에서 즐겨 사용하던 태극 문양을 중심으로 만들어진 태극기는 우주와 더불어 끝없이 창조와 번영을 희구하는 한민족(韓民族)의 이상을 담고 있다.
