David Mason, an established Korean mountain spirit expert, is visiting HEART TO HEART. 자타가 공인하는 한국의 산신전문가, 데이비드 메이슨 David Mason is an American anthropologist and expert researcher and writer on Korean mountain spirits and Korean Buddhism. His research focuses on Korea's sacred mountains and its spirits as a symbol of Korean culture, and he strives to spread awareness of them around the world. Although Mason is not of Asian descent, he always had a deep interest in oriental philosophical traditions as well as mountain culture since he was in high school. He studied (Oriental) Philosophy in California State University of the U.S, and came to Korea to find out more about these subjects. Mason was absolutely captivated with the beauty and the associated culture (both religious and spiritual) of Korean mountains which then led him to develop his study in Korean culture. He got an MA in Korean studies at Yeonsei University. In 1999, Mason was appointed as a visiting professor at Yonsei University, the Wonju campus, and in 2005, he was appointed as a full-time professor of Korean Tourism at Yonsei University. Serving as a professor, Mason kept exploring his interest in Korean Buddhism and Korean mountain culture, and published several books on these topics to internationally spread awareness of traditional Korean culture. He's one of the founding members of the Temple Stay program, and currently serving as promotional ambassador of the Baekdu-daegan. 경희대에서 전통문화 관광영어에 관련된 지식을 가르치는 관광 콘텐츠학과 교수를 역임한 그는, 한국의 신비하고 문화적 가치가 많은 '사찰과 다른 종교적 사원, 아름다운 산악 지형'을 외국인들에게 전파하는데 최선을 다하고 있다. 1981년 미국 캘리포니아 주립대학에서 동양철학을 전공하면서 한국의 무속신앙에 대해 큰 관심을 갖게 된 그는, 90년 연세대학교 대학원 한국학과에 입학하면서 한국의 문화에 대해 체계적인 연구를 시작했다. 그 후 99년 연세대 원주캠퍼스 영문과 초빙교수로 부임해 설악산 등을 즐겨 찾으며 백두대간 산상의 독특한 정신적 가치와 경이로움에 빠지게 됐다. 메이슨 교수는 "백두대간은 경관이 수려하면서도 경이롭지만 무속신앙을 비롯해 불교, 도교, 유교 등 다양한 종교가 공존하는 터전이라는 점에도 큰 흥미를 느꼈다"고 말했다. 한국의 불교, 풍수지리설 등 한국문화를 소개하는 여러 개의 웹사이트를 운영하고 있는 그는, 한국의 불교와 풍수지리 등 고유 문화를 소개하는 한국에 대한 해박한 지식과 애정을 갖고 있다. 필리핀 출신의 루어데스 여사와 10년 전 결혼한 그는 학생들에게 인기만점의 한국 전통문화 교수로서 활약, 현재는 다양한 세미나를 개최하며 한국의 산줄기와 전통문화에 관한 열띤 강연을 하는 진풍경을 연출한다고 하는데... 오늘 [하트 투 하트]에서는 국내뿐 아니라 국외에서도 한국의 산신 전문가로 알려진 데이비드 메이슨을 모시고, 그동안의 다양한 활약과 앞으로의 계획에 대해 나눠본다.

While traveling Korea, Professor David Mason fell in love with Korea's traditional culture and old stories and decided to settle down here. The idea of sanshin, the mountain spirit, that not only embodies indigenous religions but also Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, and various other religions as well as Koreans' nature-oriented thoughts has been his main subject of research. For over 30 years, Prof. Mason has traveled across the mountains of Korea and collected around 1,500 photos of sanshin. He is even starting to resemble the benevolent image of sanshin with white hair and bulging stomach, but he visits temples every chance he gets and volunteers to be a guide for foreigners trying to learn about Korean Buddhism and sanshin.
