Korean people have developed unique architectural techniques to build housing that is properly adapted to the surrounding natural environment, providing dwellers with better protection. A distinctive feature of the hanok(traditional Korean house) is an underfloor heating system called ondol. Literally meaning “warm stones” and developed during the prehistoric period, ondol refers to the system of channels running beneath the stone floor of a room through which heat is delivered from the fireplace in the kitchen. It is also designed to effectively draw out the smoke through the under-the-floor passages connected to the chimney.

한국인은 자연환경에 적응하며 한옥이라는 독창적인 주거기술을 발전시켜왔다. 한옥의특징 중 하나는 한겨울 추위를 이기기 위해 개발된 ‘온돌’이라는 난방 시스템이다. 따뜻한 돌이라는 뜻을 지닌 온돌은 한옥이 개발되기 전부터 사용되어온 매우 독특한 난방방식이다. 즉, 방바닥에 ‘구들’이라는 통로를 만들고, 부엌의 아궁이에서 불을 피우면 열과 연기가 구들을 통해서 굴뚝으로 배출되도록 과학적으로 고안된 열전달 시스템이다.

Another important element of the traditional Korean house is the board?floored room (maru) located at the center and used for multiple purposes. The room is usually larger than other rooms and is raised from the ground to allow air to freely circulate under it, creating a cool living environment during the warm summer season. The smart system combining ondol and maru makes the traditional Korean house a comfortable living space for its residents not only in the harsh winter but also in the scorching summer. 

한옥의 또 하나 특징은 덥고 습한 한여름을 쾌적하게 지내기 위해 개발된 ‘마루’라는 건축 양식이다. 마루는 땅과 일정한 공간을 두고 나무판자를 올려놓아 찬 공기와 더운 공기의 순환을 원활하게 해주는 창의적인 자연 에어컨 시스템이다. 한옥은 이렇게 독창적이고 과학적인 온돌과 마루가 적절히 어우러지도록 설계된 과학적인 집이다.

The roof is typically covered with either ceramic tiles or thatching. While most of the roof tiles are dark gray, some exhibit more vibrant colors as demonstrated, for example, by the Official Residence of the Korean President Cheongwadae, which literally means “Blue House” because, as the name shows, it is covered by blue roof tiles.

한옥의 지붕은 흙으로 다양한 색깔을 내어 구운 기와로 덮거나 볏짚으로 단단히 씌웠다. 참고로 대한민국 대통령 관저인 ‘청와대’는 ‘청기와 집’이라는 뜻이다.

While traditional Korean houses are generally wooden structures, they can survive as long as other buildings made with other materials if properly taken care of. Presumed to have been built in the early 1200s, the Geungnakjeon Hall of Bongjeongsa Temple in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk?do Province is Korea’s oldest remaining wooden building. As an ideal location for their house, Korean people preferred a site protected by hills or mountains on three of its sides, with a stream or river passing in front, thus providing easy access to water. Houses built in such a place create a great harmony with the surrounding environment, attracting more and more admirers not just in Korea but outside it as well.

나무로 만들어진 한옥은 관리만 잘하면 오래 사용할 수 있다. 1,200년대 초에 건축된 것으로 추정되는 경북 안동의 봉정사 극락전은 한국에서 가장 오래된 목조 건축물이다. 한옥은 찬 바람을 막을 수 있는 뒷산과 쉽게 물을 구할 수 있는 앞 강의 가운데에 지어진 것을 최고로 꼽는다. 자연과 조화를 이루어 사는 인간을 위해 개발된 한옥은 조형미 또한 뛰어나 외국인도 점차 그 기능과 멋에 빠져들고 있다.

These days, over 60% of Seoul’s population live in modern apartments but, interestingly, these tall, multistoried buildings are almost without exception furbished with a heating system inspired by the age-old ondol system. Similarly, newly built detached houses are also reliant on the legacy of the ondol system of heating the floor, although the traditional heat passages are now replaced by under-floor metal pipes with running water heated either by gas or electricity. This heating system has now begun to be exported to other countries with wide variations in daily temperature.

요즘 한국인은 현대식 아파트를 선호한다. 서울의 경우 공동주택 거주비율이 60% 이상으로 난방은 바닥 아래 연통이 온수 파이프로 대체된 가운데 여전히 온돌방식을 사용하고 있다. 단독주택의 경우도 마찬가지다. 최근에 온돌은 한국뿐만 아니라 일교차가 큰 나라에서도 점차 큰 인기를 얻어가고 있다
