대한민국의 ‘대한’은 어디에서 왔을까?

Where did the Korean term “Daehan” of Daehan Minguk (The Great Republic of Korea) come from?

동서양 사람 대다수가 한국(Korea)이란 명칭은 익히 알고 있었지만, 정작 정식 명칭이 대한민국이란 사실을 알게 된 것은 2002년 월드컵 때 한국인이 외친 “대~한민국!”이란 응원 덕분이다. 한국 국호에 ‘대한이’란 말을 처음 쓴 분은 고종 황제였다

Most people in the world know the name of the country as Korea. However, the reason why official name, Daehan Minguk (the Great Republic of Korea) is now known to the world is because Koreans were cheering for Korea by shouting, “Dae~han Minguk!” during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The first person to call Korea “Daehan” was the Emperor Gojong.

세계인이 부르는 코리아는 중세 고려가 아랍 및 서양과 교류할 때 고려를 ‘코리, 꼬레’로 부르면서 정착된 것이다. 고려는 이전 국가인 고구려에서 왔다. 고구려는 고려라 고도 불렀으며 또 그 이전 국가인 북부여 해모수의 고향 고리국에서 왔다.

The name “Korea” came from the word “Goryeo” which was shortened to “Cor” or “Kore” when the Goryeo Dynasty was trading with the Arabs and Europeans in the medieval period. The title “Goryeo” came from the former state “Goguryeo.” Goguryeo was also called Goryeo and this name came from Goriguk, which was the homeland of Haemosu, the founder of Northern Buyeo (itself a former state of Goguryeo).

‘대한’의 연원은 『환단고기』에서 “우리 환족이 나라를 세운 것이 가장 오래되었다(吾桓建國, 最古)”라는 문장의 ‘환’이다. ‘환桓’은 ‘하늘의 광명[天光明]’을 뜻한다. 이 ‘환’에서 탄생한 것이 ‘한韓’이다. 즉 ‘한’은‘ 하늘의 광명이 인간에게 내려와 깃든 것[人光明]’이다. ‘한’은 바로 인간이 하늘의 광명을 내려 받은 신성한 존재라는 것이다.

The term “Daehan” came from “Hwan” in the following sentence from the Samseonggi I in the Hwandangogi: “The state founded by our Hwan people was the most ancient of all states.” Hwan represents “the radiance of heaven.” “Han” stems from this “Hwan.” Han is defined as “the radiance in humans that came from the radiance of heaven and dwells in humanity.” Han implies that human beings are divine for they have received the radiance of heaven.

그런데 ‘한’이 궁극적으로 뜻하는 바는 미래의 인간상이다. ‘한’은 장차 천지의 뜻과 이상을 역사 속에서 직접 실현할 천지의 아들딸을 뜻하는 ‘태일太一 인간’을 가리킨다. 미래 문명사회에서 보편적인 인간상이 될 태일 인간, 이것이 ‘한’ 의 궁극이요, ‘대한’이 지닌 의미이다. 그래서 ‘대한’이란 단어 속에는 온 인류를 하나의 큰 가족으로 보는 사상이 담겨 있다.

But what “Han” ultimately means is the image of future humanity. It refers to the Taeil human, which means a son or daughter of heaven and earth who will accomplish the will and ideals of heaven and earth in the future.The Taeil human, which will be the general image of human beings in the future civilization, is the ultimate conclusion of “Han” and it is the meaning of “Daehan.” So, the word, “Daehan” contains the ideology of all humanity as one big family.

그래서 환국에서 대한민국에 이르기까지, 한국 역사 속의 나라 이름들이 한 결 같이 광명 사상을 담고 있다. 환국은 ‘환한 나라’, 배달은 ‘동방의 밝은 땅’, 단군조선의 조선은 ‘아침 햇살을 먼저 받는 곳[朝光先受地]’, 조선을 이은 북부여의 부여는 ‘불’이란 말로 광명을 의미 한다. 이처럼 대한제국의 대한까지 ‘한’의 광명 정신이 나라 이름으로 내려왔다.

Hence, all names of Korean dynasties in history consistently contain the ideology of radiance, from Hwanguk to Daehan Minguk (The Great Republic of Korea). Hwanguk means “the nation of radiance;” Baedal means “the radiant land of the East;” in the name Dangun Joseon, Joseon means “the land where the morning sun shines first;” and in the name of the successor of Joseon, Northern Buyeo, Buyeo is “fire” (which also represents radiance). As shown from these examples, the spirit of radiance in “Han” has been conveyed in the names of Korean states up until Daehan of the Daehan Empire.
