Kazakhstan, the center of Central Asia...
광활한 중앙아시아의 중심, 카자흐스탄.

[내레이션]
Almaty is the capital of Kazakhstan and its largest city. Panfilov Park located in the heart of Almaty is always full of people strolling around.
구 수도인 알마티는 카자스흐탄의 최대도시이다. 시내 중심에 위치한 판필로프 공원에는 산책을 즐기는 시민들로 여유로움이 넘쳐난다.

[내레이션]
An elderly musician in the park plays a familiar melody on his accordion. It's "Arirang."
공원 한 켠 늙은 악사의 아코디언에서 친숙한 멜로디가 흘러나온다. 아리랑이다.

[내레이션]
In the autumn of 1937, Koreans who migrated to the Russian Far East in search of a better life were forced to move to Central Asia under Stalin's coercive migration policy. They were loaded onto freight trains like objects and were eventually abandoned in a wasteland.
먹고 살기 위해 고향을 떠나 연해주에서 살아가던 조선인들은 1937년 가을 스탈린의 강제 이주 정책에 의해 짐짝처럼 화물열차에 실려 중앙아시아 황무지에 버려졌다

[내레이션]
They were called "Goryeo people" after their ruined home country. The population of their descendants in Kazakhstan now reaches 100,000.

[현장음] 고려상인
제가 제 힘으로 담근 거예요 아주 맛있어요
(김치)담글 줄 아세요?
우리도 고려인인데 김치도 못 담그면 무슨 고려사람이에요 이게 고려음식이 아니고 뭐예요

[내레이션]
The first generation of Korean migrants in Kazakhstan has passed away, but the second and third generations have taken firm root as members of Kazakhstan society thanks to their inborn diligence and hardworking personalities.
이주 1세대들은 세상을 떠났지만 2, 3세대들은 타고난 성실함과 노력으로 카자흐스탄 사회에 뿌리를 내렸다.

[내레이션]
They have protected their Korean identity to this day.
그리고 고려인이라는 정체성을 여전히 지켜오고 있다.

[내레이션]
on the outskirts of Almaty is a rural village where each household has its own garden.
집집마다 크고 작은 텃밭이 딸린 농촌마을이다.

[내레이션]
Vera Kim is a second-generation ethnic Korean who was born and raised here.
김베라 할머니는 이곳에서 나고 자란 고려인 2세다.

[현장음] 김베라 할머니
가지도 나고 이런 고추도 있고

[내레이션]
Every day she takes care of her garden, where she grows all kinds of crops familiar to Koreans.
그녀가 매일매일 소중히 돌보는 텃밭에는 한국인들에게 친근한 여러 작물들이 빼곡하게 자라고 있다.

[현장음]
고려 사람은 이걸 생으로 먹기 좋아하고 카자흐스탄 사람은 이거 안먹어요. 냄새가 난다고

[내레이션]
During the migration of ethnic Koreans, some 20,000 people died from hunger and cold.
강제 이주 당시 기아와 추위로 약 2만명이 목숨을 잃었다.

[내레이션]
But even in the face of starvation, the Korean migrants did not eat the seeds they had brought with them.
그러나 고려인들은 굶주림에 쓰러지면서도 품 안의 간직한 종자씨앗만은 먹지 않고 버텼다.

[내레이션]
Today's generation of ethnic Koreans can live in affluence thanks to the sacrifices of first-generation migrants.
지금의 풍요는 윗세대의 희생을 바탕으로 만들어진 셈이다

[인터뷰] 김베라 할머니
우리 어머니가 일하시면서 고려 창가 아리랑을 불렀어요. 내가 어릴 때 듣고 아리랑을 배웠어요

[현장음] 김베라 할머니
아리랑 아리랑 아라리요 아리랑 고개를 넘어간다

[인터뷰] 김베라 할머니
지금도 밭에서 일할 때 어머니를 생각하면서 아리랑을 불러요
감자 배고자. 이렇게 다 만든 걸 앉혀서 쪄요

[내레이션]
Potato dumplings are made with potato starch wrappers stuffed with all kinds of ingredients.
감자 배고자는 감자 전분 피에 속을 넣어 만든 만두다.

[내레이션]
Vera's mother, who was from North Korea, always made dumplings with extra care to express nostalgia about her home town that she could no longer visit.
이북이 고향이던 어머니는 갈 수 없는 고향에 대한 그리움을 담아 하나하나 정성껏 만두를 빚으셨다.

[현장음]
감자 배고자 나왔습니다
감사합니다 우리 며느리. 감자 배고자 어떻게 나왔을까? 아이고 곱습니다

[내레이션]
Now it's Vera who expresses her love for her deceased mother through her dumplings.
그리고 이제는 베라씨가 만날 수 없는 어머니에 대한 그리움을 꼭꼭 눌러 담아 만두를 빚고 있다.

[내레이션]
Three generations of this family have gathered for the first time in a while. Vera's husband, who is also a second-generation ethnic Korean, is happy to try the nostalgic food.
오랜만에 3대가 한 자리에 모였다. 베라씨처럼 고려인 2세인 남편도 추억이 담긴 음식이 반갑다.

[내레이션]
Noodles in the meat broth prepared by their Kazakhstani daughter-in-law also taste good.
카자흐스탄인 며느리가 만든 고기국수도 일품이다.

[내레이션]
Members of this family miss their ancestors even more when they have sumptuous meals.
더욱 간절해지는 생각이 있다.

[인터뷰] 김베라
우리 어머니 아버지가 1937년에 이주해오셨는데 카자흐스탄에 오니 아무것도 없었습니다. 집도 없어서 땅을 파고 그곳에 들어가 추운 겨울을 지냈습니다. 카자흐스탄 사람들이 우리 어머니 아버지에게 빵도 주고 따뜻한 물도 줬습니다. 그렇게 겨울을 지내고 봄이 되어 고려 사람들이 산에 올라가 작물도 심고 산에 나는 채소 뜯어 먹고 살았어요. 지금 어머니가 안계셔서 서글프지요. 이렇게 좋은 것도 못 보고 돌아가셔서 이 세상에 있으면 우리 같이...

[내레이션]
Vera's mother made numerous sacrifices for her children.
자식들을 위해 평생 고생만하다 돌아가신 어머니.

[내레이션]
She liked to sing a song from her home country.
그리고 어머니가 늘 부르셨던 고향의 노래.

[내레이션]
As a child, Vera took solace in "Arirang" when she had to endure hunger and cold. Now it reminds her of her mother.
베라씨에게 아리랑은 춥고 배고팠던 유년 시절의 위로요, 어머니에 대한 간절한 그리움이다.

[내레이션]
The first-generation migrants expressed their sorrow and nostalgia by singing "Arirang." They passed away even before they had a chance to visit their motherland again.
아리랑을 부르며 망향의 한과 그리움을 달래던 이주 1세대들은 결국 고향땅을 밟지 못하고 눈을 감았다
